The bundled effects are basic and their settings can’t be automated, but the biggest problem is the limitation to 16-bit recording and mixing.
If Acid Music Studio’s new features aren’t geared towards casual users, perhaps this version is better suited to enthusiasts who simply can’t afford the flagship version. This meant we couldn’t add this effect directly in the Mixing Console, and instead had to take a trip to the Plug-In Manager and drag it across.

We were impressed to see that various third-party plugins we already had installed were correctly sorted by type, but mystified as to why the bundled British Valve Custom effect was missing from the Amp Simulator folder. The latter sorts the bundled and any third-party plugins by effect type, developer or plugin technology. Support for tempo curves is welcome, as is the Plug-In Manager window. It’s not all doom and gloom in this update. There’s a reasonable selection of preset sounds supplied on the installation disc, but browsing them via the Windows Explorer dialog box is hopelessly clumsy. Other MIDI sounds come from the basic DLS Soft Synth. TruePianos Amber Lite is a high-quality acoustic piano VST instrument, and a valuable addition to the package. The fly in the ointment is that Acid Music Studio can’t monitor a live input with effects in place – it’s tricky to perform with an electric guitar when you can’t hear the sound of your amp, virtual or otherwise. Download 300 free MIDI drum loops covering over 70 styles of music. It only has one amp model but its Marshall-inspired tone sounds good to us. Studio Devil British Valve Custom is a capable guitar amp simulator.
There are a couple of new VST plugins included. It’s possible to force loops to behave like longer recordings, but then they don’t loop, leaving the user to resort to copious copying and pasting.

Longer audio clips use the Efficient rather than Pro mode, while shorter, looped samples can only use the old algorithm.

That would be fine if users could rely on the software to choose the best settings, but it doesn’t. However, its setting are buried in the Clip Properties window, which is hidden by default. Its audio quality is a significant improvement on the previous algorithm, which produced garbled results when shifting or stretching by large amounts. The new pitch-shifting and time-stretching algorithm suffers a similar fate.
